When it comes to securing your belongings, a home safe is a great investment. But with so many different options on the market, how do you know which one is right for you? Here are some things to consider when choosing a safe for your home.
Type of lock
Choosing between a dial combination lock and a digital keypad depends on individual preference. If you find the numbers on a dial difficult to read, a keypad might be a better option for you.
Both styles have pros and cons. Combination locks are less expensive and don’t require batteries, but it takes a locksmith to change the combination, and they can be difficult to use for people with poor eyesight or shaky hands. Digital locks are easy to open and often have security features for incorrect attempts, but they require batteries and usually cost more.

Type of protection
Unfortunately, not all safes are created equal. Some offer will offer lots of protection against fire but fall down in the face of home invaders or vice versa. Before you purchase a home safe, think about what type of protection you need most.
Keep in mind that, according to Consumer Reports, fire is the most common cause of asset loss, followed by burglary, and then water damage.
Composite safes, or safes that offer some degree of protection against multiple types of invasion, are available. However, the levels to which the provide protection may vary greatly. Weigh each protection standard before making your decision.

Location
The best place for a safe is out of direct view and away from regular foot traffic but easy for you to access. Avoid the main bedroom closet; it may be too obvious. If fire is a concern, you might want to install it at the junction of a couple exterior walls on the ground floor. To protect a safe from flooding, keep it above ground level.
